review 1: The book I have read is called Pandora’s Key, written by the author Nancy Fisher. It was published in 2011 and contains approximately 286 pages of text depending on what you see as actual pages. The book is seen as a fantasy thriller. The story is about a girl named Evangeline who just turned 16 years old. On the morning of her birthday she is given the key necklace her mother has been wearing around her neck for as long as she can remember. The necklace has been passed on down through the generations, from the mothers to their daughters. This is followed by a number of unexpected events. Evangeline’s mother Olivia, who has been having strange daydreams for a while, is discovered to have an incurable illness. Shortly thereafter she gets kidnapped by a supposed friend to... more the family. Almost everyone Evangeline knows turns out to be involved in something much deeper she could have ever imagined. My favorite part was chapter thirty, in which (spoiler alert!) you understand that Evangeline’s best friend’s boyfriend called Tristin actually is Malledy who you have been reading about the entire book. I felt like that was a huge plot twist in the story and despite all surprises so far you still got your mind blown. The story is mostly told from either Malledy or Evangeline’s point of view. I feel like they both have a little bit too shallow personalities and are poorly described. I didn’t really get the connection I would like to have with them. At the same time, you can’t blame the author for this, she could not really fit in more character description without making the book longer and as the book is the first of a trilogy it is possible that she goes deeper into the characters personalities in the following books. The setting on the other hand is very detailed in my opinion and I felt like I could visualize the surroundings without any greater effort. The theme which stood out the most was friendship and I think that the author is trying to tell us that we might not know everything about the people we see the most and that you never can be 100 percent sure which side your friends are on.The mood seems quite sad and grey in my opinion, the story doesn’t contain very many happy moments. It seems like many of Evangeline’s acquaintances are constantly either getting killed or betraying her.I personally would like much more details and know more about the lore. I felt like the book wasn’t catching as much of my interest as it should. The book didn’t feel finished; in my opinion the author should have put down more time to describe characteristics and more of the backstory to the key and the events. The author doesn’t seem to have much experience as a writer, but it might also be that this is just the way modern writers compose their books. I will say however that I liked how there almost always was something exciting happening at the end of each chapter, and since the chapters often were quite short the book gave you a reason to continue reading which might be good for people who like reading very fast paced and short books. These are the people I would recommend the book to, if any.//Ludde Te12
review 2: Very close to the beginning of the book I though it was going to be an interesting read. That view of the book changed rather quickly though. I had a hard time relating to the characters and therefor also not following the story as I usually would. I am still unsure whether or not this was because of how the book was written or because of how I read the book. This was after all the first time I read a full book in e-book format. Not up until about 4/5 of the book I actually started enjoying reading. There were some distracting spelling mistakes throughout the book, that with two professional editors helping the author with the book, really shouldn't have to be there. The characters in the book also acted somewhat weird in certain situations that just made it even harder to understand them.I'm not too much of a fan when it comes to this kind of fantasy, so I don't think it's fair for me to put a grade on the book. However, I think it overall was a decent book. Nothing I would recommend to anyone but it definitely wasn't bad. less
