review 1: The title says it all and you must read to understand the emotions involved with Elise's first love. I enjoyed reading this memoir and peeking in on the life of Nancy and her family. I'm a big believer in karma and somewhere out there is your soulmate. Your paths are destined to cross. What you do with that opportunity can be a feeling of regret or happiness. Truly the stars must have been aligned for Elise and for Nancy to see the potential for a great book!
review 2: I won this book on First Reads and was really excited to read it. I am a romantic at heart and the idea of someone finally ending up with their first love sounded like a perfect story. Yet I found it hard to get into this book and never quite finished it. This book has many characters (friends... more of her mother, aunts, and uncles, etc.) that are never fully developed and just muddled and confused the story for me. I often found myself paging back to figure out just who was the person saying the current dialogue. The novel also jumps around in time. On one page the narrator will be in middle school and two pages later talking about being 16. It was hard for me to keep the story line and the characters straight in my head. This book seemed to me like the author has written many stories about her family and went back to choose the best for this book without making them into a cohesive novel. It read like a series of vignettes.I feel like I can't review this book completely because I didn't finish it, but when there are dozens of books on my shelf, it's hard to finish a book that doesn't captivate my interest. less
