review 1: I thought this was a great book and would have given it five stars had I not started to dislike the main characters towards the end. In the beginning I felt for Irene as the author did an outstanding job communicating her grief over his son's murder but towards the end I found Irene to be irritating and the dialogue felt too unbelievable. One reviewer mentioned that she found the book weighed down by stereotypes which is true but I actually liked that the characters were created this way. It's a sad reality that many people share the same views as some of the characters and I enjoyed that they weren't created to be more likeable. I feel like it added a more realistic element to an ending I didn't quite believe in.
review 2: I probably should have given this
... more book a higher rating, but I couldn't. I just didn't like the characters very much. The first half of the book is a bit boring--the story is more expository than I like. It started to pick up for me later on as the main character starts to come to terms with her son's death. I was also interested in finding out about the secret that was hinted regarding Shep's death. Once I found out the secret, it just made me disgusted with most of the characters. I also found the ending upsetting. less

Loved the book. Hard to imagine how you would handle forgiveness in this situation.
