review 1: A book produced by a well educated Historian who has the knack for making whatever challenge he attempts lively, accessible and well researched. The tongue in cheek opening with the world beginning with The Big Bang certainly put paid to critics of his earlier works. This works is a true gold mine of knowledge and for me immensely interesting. Though I must admit to my joy waning once the Jacobite Wars were finished as from there on the history of Scotland became rather boring and everyday. Neil’s attempts to bring the events forward and show how they not only affected the world but how the world affected Scotland was brilliant indeed. This is a must read for anyone with even the slightest link to Scotland and its people and showed a rare look at these amazing people an... mored how their steadfastness evolved from many dire situations
review 2: Scottish history -- ugh! What a horrifying tale of a couple of thousand years. Some highlights and enouraging moments in there to be sure, but mostly a grisly tale of people being unbelievably cruel. But it sure makes for compelling reading... Neil Oliver's book is fat and full of details, but he still manages to make it a pretty quick read. I like where he ends it, with the open question of Scottish identity, home rule, and where the heck their economy is going next. If you're of Scottish heritage, and have any leanings toward pride in that direction, Oliver's book does a good job of balancing the heroic struggle with the brutal realities. These were not nice people, for the most part, and Oliver is not in the business of celebrating them as heroes. less
