review 1: The Final Countdown Characterization – 3.5/5 Stars Isis is not your typical high school student. (But when are they?) She’s well-developed and interesting from page one. We start with a journal entry that Isis has written about her dreams and move forward into the story. She’s having nightmares and isn’t sleeping, so the reader gets to see the struggle and is thrown right into the mess. I found Isis to be a realistically motivated character who makes some very poor life choices at times. What teenager hasn’t? Nely Cab does a great job intertwining Isis’ interactions with other characters with Isis as a solitary figure. Another great product of Creatura are the male characters. There’s also something to be said about cocky, holier-than-thou men who sometimes n... moreeed to be put in their place and get with the times.Dialogue – 4.5/5 Stars There were quite a few moments that had me laughing out loud on my train home from work. That doesn’t happen often when I read. Occasionally, a book can get a smile from me or maybe a small chuckle, but I was quite amused during certain bits of dialogue and internal monologue. Nely Cab makes great use of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor to drive this story at times. She does a great balance of modern speech patterns with old school poetic, even verbose, styles. Cab’s use of dialogue in this story doesn’t just move the story along, it is a driving force that I thoroughly enjoyed.Plot – 3.5/5 Stars I am partial to paranormal/fantasy books, so I’ve read quite a few and see a lot of repetitive storylines. This was a very refreshing idea that I found myself having trouble seeing what was coming next. This is a plus. Keep me guessing and excited to see what happens next, and I really fall for the story very quickly. Cab’s Creatura does just that. I loved the mix of mythology, folklore, and modern age.Visual Imagery – 3/5 Stars There were moments, like in Isis’ sleeping state, that I found myself engrossed in the visuals. I wanted to know more, to see what Isis was seeing. Of all of the areas that I rate, this would probably be the one that I wanted more of. More details would only elevate an already great book.Ending 3.5/5 Stars The minute I finished this book, I hopped right on the next one. That says a lot. There was a hint of “Oh my god!” mixed with “Holy sh**!” mixed with “Really? I wanted a few more pages!” I got enough story to tide me over, but the desire to know what happened next was perfect.Total: 18/25 StarsWhy read this book?If you enjoy Young Adult Paranormal books, Creatura hits all of the right notes. There’s suspense, mystery, mythology, romance, and snap/crackle/pop. This is definitely one not to be missed!Follow me on WordPress, Twitter, and Facebook @ LivreIt2Me
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read, and I did not want to put it down. The plot was unique and interesting, and the book is very well written. The point of view changed a few times between the two main characters and I liked seeing things from David's eyes. The characters are likeable, and it was easy to sympathize with Isis. There was a cliffhanger ending that made me really wish I had the next one in my hands. I hope to visit with Isis and David again soon. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. *I was given a copy of this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. less
