review 1: Is the internet changing our brains? The answer seems to be yes. Are these changes positive? No one knows, but Carr is sounding a warning bell with “The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains”. Carr’s big question revolves around our ability to read and think deeply. He contends that the distracting nature of digital reading – whether on a computer, tablet, or phone – inhibits our ability to read “deeply” and to enter information into our long term memory. He cites many studies and uses current brain physiology to support his contention that we are rerouting our neural pathways to enhance efficiency (shallow reading such as skimming, multitasking, etc.) at the expense of profound and creative thought. Carr may be on to something or he may ... morebe completely wrong; however, as more of us spend our lives in front of a screen, no matter how small, always connected, always clicking on another link, it is worth our while to stop and consider the implications.
review 2: Fascinating read on the progress of technology and the corresponding evolution of the mind. Exceptional insight into how we are shaped by the technology we use, the computer & internet in particular, and how that is dangerous. Strip-mining for relevance has replaced excavation for meaning. Really good & insightful. Completely explained several things I've noticed about how I & others think/read/etc. less

I would like to read Mary Roach tackling this topic.
