review 1: This is the first YA LGBT novel that I've read, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was basically the story of a gay guy trying to make it through the last year of high school. Parts of the book seemed a little over the top, but then again, I live in an extremely liberal place. The other portions, about partying, drinking, drugs and such, are probably closer than I'd like to think. All in all, I found this an interesting read, but didn't really care about the characters at all. However, there is something related for which I can give a 5+ star rating. It's Corey's review of this book, which happened to appear near the top of the reviews. It's negative, but funny as hell.
review 2: I found this book inconsistent. I didn't care enough about any of the characters... more for their relationships and interactions to affect me. Maybe the constant drinking and pot-smoking was a factor in the degree to which I felt involved with the characters - it was hard to take the narrator's emotions seriously when he and his friends spent so much of their time drunk and/or stoned. The author tries to tie the narrator's summer of coming out story to the town's news story of that summer: the disappearance of a local girl. Ultimately, although it's obvious that the author intends for there to be a profound connection, I didn't feel it. I did like the relationship between the narrator and his temporary neighbor, Lucy, but ultimately, that wasn't enough to make me enthusiastic about the rest of the story. There are some interesting moments, but overall this wasn't a satisfying read. less
