review 1: This book is about Nikolai's rich lifetime experience in India. Through little examples of everyday life in India, this book teaches us about friendship, how making decisions is an important part of our life, how circumstances affect our lives and what not! But one thing you need to know before reading this book is that if you are looking for a serious, religious book to get enlightened about Buddhism, then this book is not for you. It is a lighthearted, funny journey of the narrator in India, filled with unique characters, circumstances and humor. This book simply inspires me to go to dharmshala once and have all the adventures that the narrator experienced. Just one word- Terrific.
review 2: The book is less a memoir about monastic life than it is a gloriousl
... morey painted portrait of everyday idiosyncratic life in a small Indian town. If you are expecting the former, you may be disappointed; shift your expectations to the latter, and you will not. That is not to say Grozni entirely fails to explore his experiences as a Buddhist monk. Just that they are more minimal in scope, and (at least for me) could have been fleshed out more. In particular, I don't feel that some of his conclusions about monasticism and religion were properly supported. The book is rich in detail and packed with funny anecdotes about village, as well as some thought-provoking segments about the nature of life, perception, what is and what is not (and so forth). Grozni tells his story quite well indeed. less
