review 1: I'm incredibly interested in French history so I really liked to read this novel about a famous french chef. However this book was more style over substance. The author tried to use this novel to demonstrate how much they knew about Escoffier's cooking rather than telling a simple narrative. The chapters flitted back and forth through time and this started to become confusing, not least because the author did not give us any dates to work with. Also the relationship between Escoffier and his mistress was not written passionately enough. I will have to read a biograpghy of Escoffier now as this book was really patchy.
review 2: Initially the descriptions of food in this book were lyrical and beautifully vivid. Eventually, it took away from the story and just be
... morecame unnecessary fluff. The time line was poorly described and a bit confusing at times, which unfortunately just made me lose interest in the characters. The male protagonist was an incredibly selfish man, so I never bonded with him. I sympathized with Delphine simply because she could never live up to Escoffier's first love/mistress, but that was the only true emotion I felt throughout the book. less
