review 1: Insightful as it is, Chomsky contradicts himself while suggesting organistion (which i think correspoonds to centralization as well) to the labor and otherwise unions by saying that consistency is significant thing the unions need; at the same time he suggest, however, that there shouldn't be a centralized authority (which encourages totalitarian tendencies) in unions and other 'democratic' bodies. The leadership, wherever it is, should be community based take into consideration the 'stockholders' as well as the stakeholders. He might have a point in the suggestion leading towards establishing power/community houses which could possibly dismantle the notion of ruler vs. ruled; however that's tantamount to challenging the status quo which, according to him, won't be allowed ... moreby the stakeholder of the current system.Plus, this book somehow counters, in a way, the progressive feminist version of 'women in work' by justifying economically the traditional role of women; however willingly - goes without saying.Chomsky also weigh the threats of capitalist regime to social/traditional/cultural values (to the institution of family as a whole), sense of community/society/solidarity and most importantly to public education and social welfare system stemming - entirely - from materialist, without any grounds in morality and ethics, thinking; another contradiction, the public education system that he condemns at same time advocates for that system to be freely available to the public - that's intriguing, either this is a genuine contradiction or he's part of the same elite that he condemns from a different perspective leading to the promotion of the one and the same thing.Corporatizating every entity to 'promote' economic growth and increase profitability - even in some academic instituions, lately - seems a very well executed plan by the few, according to him.
review 2: The information about what our US foreign policies have done over the past years, and what is happening today at a domestic and international level set me back on my heels. Sure, I knew that the US uses unnecessary force -- after all, I remember the four students killed at Kent State. I also knew that we are corrupt. I remember Nixon, Reagan, and the Oliver North trials. We all KNOW about Bush and his gallop across the planet in search of "weapons of mass destruction," but even with that knowledge I was set back to learn of the depth of our hypocrisy, intrigue, and blatant undermining of nations' rights and human rights. We make the Nazis look like boy scouts, and the citizens of the US write off these reports with a nonchalance that is reminiscent of the mythological attitude of Marie Antoinette toward the suffering of her populace: "Let them eat cake." (We just support our troops and wave flags.)I challenge those that write Chomsky off as a "crack pot, conspiracy theorist" to list just five of his claims and objectively scrutinize the information. If you are like me, you know enough about our history and current actions that you will know he's presenting the facts in an amazingly objective fashion. What's even more amazing is that he believes there is hope and states that it is up to US people to make different choices. It's up to US. less
