review 1: Disjuncture of storytelling and unreliable narrators create archetypes rather than linear characters; there's the feeling that these siblings, lovers, and murderers exist, have always existed, and will continue to exist as they continuously die and reborn in their infinite repentance. Romantically morbid, full of girls traveling in abstractly hospitable climates, plotting with sharp objects and eating fruit.
review 2: This is not a book for everyone, due to the nonlinear narrative style and experimental forms contained therein; at times, it reads more like a prose poem than a novel. At the heart of the story is the mystery of who killed Roman Stone. Rather than the novel unfurling like a mystery, it is more a meditation on storytelling, truth, and memory that p... morelays out in a story of who does what to whom. The tone is moody, with occasional light moments. As always, Labiner's use of language is superb and worth taking one's time. less
