review 1: this is a book with an interesting premise. it begins with a child kidnapping that has only one witness, that being a female gorilla that is being used in a research project concerning teaching gorillas to communicate through sign language. when the ape begins frantically using the few signs she knows to tell a story about a baby being taken, her caretaker slowly begins piecing the information together. so then.... how does she go about convincing the police that a gorilla is witness to a crime? and if the police believe her, how do they use the testimony of an ape in court? the author makes this whole unlikely story very believable and, though it's predictable in some ways, it's inventive enough to be enjoyable to the end.
review 2: I could not put this book d... moreown. The plot is highly imaginative. The caracters are sketched with enough details that I cared about them, even the two gorillas--especially the gorillas. And I cared deeply for the teen mother, whose baby was stolen. The story has a huge heart. The writing flows along and the sentences have what I'd call musicality. Also, some books are padded with extraneous description, but not this one. Who wants to get bogged down in unnecessary words when you've stolen time in the middle of the night to read a book? Subtle clues lead to an ending that is surprising yet satisfying. Then, at the end of the book, the author cleverly planted the first two chapters of another of her novels, SHAKEN, so now I'm hooked on that one as well. This woman can write. less
