review 1: This is the kind of book that, although it's easy to read, I expect it will take two or three re-readings to fully appreciate all its symbolism. A literary novel of magic realism, it's both very Finnish (I'm sure the Creatureville books are meant to make you think of the Moomins) and akin to Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It would be interesting to read/discuss the two books together.
review 2: This book will not be for everyone - Jaaskelainen creates a world where gnomes can attack you in your back yard, where stories inside of books can mutate to new plot lines, where children are haunted by the same nightmare. I'm not usually drawn to books with a fantasy element but the emphasis on books and the literary society lured me in. While none
... moreof the characters are particularly likable, most of them are intriguing and made me want to keep reading to unravel the mysteries around them. But if you like endings where all of the loose threads are tied up, you will be disappointed. A lot is left to the reader to decide or just to speculate. This is both frustrating and wonderful. I think once a world of fantasy is created it's hard to then resolve all the mysteries of this world in a way that will be more satisfying than what you've already begun to imagine. I left this book with a million unanswered questions that will keep me mulling this story over for a few more days. less
