review 1: This book was just okay. I never got lost in the book, in fact it was quite easy to put down and do other things. While the characters seemed nice, they weren't all that interesting to me. Lita, the main character, was really trying to develop her own sense of self, yet she couldn't quite leave her family. Unfortunately this happens to many of us, and since this book didn't really provide any answers, it wasn't a complete satisfying read.
review 2: We've all heard this story before and many of us have experienced much of it: coming of age, love, dreams, promise. What separates this novel from the others is Patricia Engel's way of inserting the reader into her fictional world, which transforms into anything but. I experienced everything along with the main chara... morecters and found myself paralleling my own life experiences to those in the book. The words are so poignant and the story is painfully honest. This is possibly one of my favorite books of all time. Engel is a brilliantly captivating writer. less
