review 1: I loved this book. The author writes beautifully in a manner that continually delighted me. Volk juxtaposes her mother's life with that of Elsa Schiaparelli, and in doing so, she reveals wonderful details about the world of art around her. She reflects on the creative process and what it means to become a woman with a strong and beautiful mother. I'm not going to read the other reviews until I've left this book to settle inside me because I'm surprised that it doesn't even get 4 stars. Reading, Shocked, for me was the "ahhhhhhh" experience I love to have when I read.
review 2: It was an interesting concept for the author. She compares/contrasts her perfectionist glamorous mother with Schiaparelli. I'm not really sure the conceit really worked but I foun
... mored it interesting none the less. I appreciated the author's attempt to seem fair to her mother who, though loved by her daughter, really does emerge as a monster. She also tends to whitewash Schiap's worst side but it does make sense in the context of a young girl trying to find a role model that was less destructive to her sense of self than her self-absorbed uptight mother less

Unusual. The repetitious structure started to grate a bit.
