A World Without You – Beth Revis

Today I want to start with a new series on my blog. I decided that I wanted to spend more time reading during this year and therefore wanted to log my readings in reviews. This will I be doing through one concrete rating system that is used by Book Roast. She is amazing! But before I am going to start off with this review, here are the basics of the book:

  • Title: A World Without You
  • Author: Beth Revis
  • Publisher: Razorbill
  • Date: July 19th, 2016
  • Length: 384 pages
  • ISBN: 1595147152
  • Genre: Young Adult

Character:

This book resolved itself around the main character Bo. Most of the chapters were written from his perspective which meant that the author gave a good view of his thoughts and reactions to others. His growth as a character was there, for me personally. It could have been a lot better, but it was there. I liked that throughout the story the character changed but also stayed true to himself. On the other hand, the character stayed a little flat and could have gone through a lot more growth.
Besides Bo, there were a few other characters displayed in this book. One of them was Phoebe, the sister of Bo. The remaining chapters were written through her eyes which gave a different perspective on the story which was very nice. I really liked the way she was looking at the same scenario’s but differently than Bo, obviously. Her character didn’t have the depth that Bo’s character had, but enough for this sort of character. The other side characters didn’t have chapters written from their perspective but did have enough writing about them to make up what sort of characters they were, which I liked a lot.

Overall on the characters, I thought the growth and depth were at the beginning of really good, which for me resolves in a 7.

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere in the book was pretty good. The world of the story was realistic and was imaginable. Therefore, the story came alive which made it, in my opinion, a lot better. It wasn’t the best world and it could have been more in detail, but it was good enough for me. Other than that, I don’t really have a lot to say about this so therefore I won’t haha.

The atmosphere gets for me an 8 which is still in the really good department.

Writing style:

The writing style wasn’t really my style. The book was written in short sentences, immature words and overall just not really my favorite style. You could see that the book was of the genre Young Adult. However, this kind of style did make sure that I would read along because it was understandable. I was able to continue reading without flaw which made it a little bit worse. I think, if some of you like this understanding, not so difficult style of writing, the style would be great.

For me personally, this was mediocre. I didn’t really like it, but there were some good aspects. Because of this, I am going to give this a 6 out of 10.

Plot:

Hm, the plot of the book was, well… I wouldn’t call it bad, but it certainly wasn’t great. At the beginning of the book, it was all very flat, and I didn’t find it that intriguing to continue reading. However, that changed at the end. But only was the story flat, I could also very easily predict what would happen next. At least in the beginning. The beginning therefore really wasn’t great. Fortunately, the story changed for the better more to the end of the book, this is where I started to get into it. The plot became unpredictable and made my mind really question where it was going. Which was good!

Overall, I think the plot was mediocre, but only because of the ending part. So, therefore, I am going to give it a 5.5, because, in the end, it did play out nicely.

Intrigue:

As I said before, the beginning wasn’t intriguing at all. It was just there, and I wanted to continue reading because I wanted to finish the book, not because I wanted to really know where the story went. But this really changed throughout the story. I got more and more intrigued which was a nice experience. I even finished the book within the month, which is a big achievement for me! I am really glad that the end made it so much better because that made everything better.

I am thinking about which scoring would it this section and I am thinking about a 6 because it really wasn’t good, but in the end, it wasn’t as horrible as I thought either. So, a 6 will do.

Logic:

The logic was very good. I liked the way every character thought and how all the events played out. At the very best end, the logic was a little off, but it didn’t really get my mood down. I still liked it. Not really much to say other than an 8 which will do for this part.

Enjoyment:

I did enjoy this book. It wasn’t the best book, but I enjoyed it while it lasted. Re-reading this book won’t happen so high than a 9 is not the right rating for this book, but I will keep it on my shelves. Why did I like it? I don’t really know, the plot wasn’t that good, the writing style wasn’t… I guess I just liked the story. Therefore, I am going to give this part a score of 7.

Overall scoring: 6.8 out of 10.
