review 1: This writing takes the memoir to a whole new level comparing the author's mother to Elsa Schiaparelli. Both women have so much in common that the idea actually works. The information is fascinating and entertaining. It gives a very thorough picture of the fashion women of their times and how someone younger (the author) takes it all in. The other really exciting context of the book is how books themselves and this book in particular affect the reader. The interweaving of the layers of this book is flawless.
review 2: I loved this book. Patricia Volk tells her real life story of growing up under the influence of both her mother, Audrey, and the famous fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, whose book Volk read as a young person. Each of these women had a strong se
... morense of being a woman. There are similarities in their views but also radical differences which fill out the picture of "woman" for the author. This is no pedantic read. Each chapter is full of wonderful stories of both women, comparing and contrasting their attitudes on topics such as clothing, sex, being a mom, "the womanly arts," and improving the mind. I was into it the whole way.Wonderful read. less
