review 1: A timely, very enjoyable and educative read about Denmark and what it is to be Danish.Patrick Kingsley's book looks at many aspects of life in Denmark, how society is structured there, how it works and largely successfully manages to strike a workable balance between prosperity, a greater measure of equality and a level of contentment in the population that is the envy of much of the world. The author takes us through considered appreciations of Danish education, cuisine, furniture design, the welfare state, immigration in Denmark, Copenhagen, the world of Danish Television after Forbryldsen ( The Killing ) and the region of Jutland and does so in a delicately crafted way that allows the subjects room to breath on the page without imposing his own views.I look forward to vi... moresiting Denmark soon for the first time and this book has helped me to understand more about that country and all that it offers
review 2: After several vacations around Europe, a couple years ago I picked Denmark mostly at random for a 10-day trip. I was intrigued by the unique people, culture, and contrasts. The Danes are hugely progressive in social services (subsidized education, health care, day care, etc.), yet reactionary and xenophobic against foreigners, especially Muslims. Their renowned school of design is miniminalist and purely functional, but also puts out wild, sci-fi iconic pieces like the egg chair. Their cuisine has long consisted of simple herring and brown bread, yet is being revolutionized and reinvented by a few bold chefs. Whereas all other Scandinavian countries oppressively tax alcohol, beers flow freely and deliciously in Denmark. And although they are ranked the happiest people in the world, their entertainment industry paints a bleak, severe picture of the country (like The Killing). This book is a great introduction for anyone who's curious to learn more about the fascinating people of Denmark. less
