review 1: Upon completing The Orphans of Race Point, the first adjective that springs to my mind in describing this book is flimsy. The plot, characters and pivotal moments are riddled with inconsistencies and implausibility. Namely, Hallie's beloved, Gus, becomes a priest!? And then her warm and loving family members cannot broach the subject with her! And Mila was drawn by as a cliched and unrealistic teenage. However, Patry Francis does pose a thought provoking question about how far a victim of domestic violence can and should go to escape her tormentor.

The characters - especially Gus - were unbelievable, and I even laughed out loud at some of his amazingly stupid and unrealistic actions. I quit reading it. I just quit. So I guess I'm going to miss all the twists and surprises in the plot that other reviewers have mentioned. But I'm also going to save myself about 300 more pages of reading and a lot of aggravation. less

I thought this book was good, but the story went on too long. Could have been told in less time.
