review 1: The premise of this new fantasy is interesting, with frightening monsters called Bog Noblins, a race of legendary fighters called Luck Uglies, a corrupt ruler, and a little town called Drowning. Riley lives with her mother and little sister, and has two best friends who accompany her on adventures around the village. Warned never to go out on the night of the Black Moon, Rye disobeys her mother, and soon regrets it: a Bog Noblin is out and about, and Rye gets too close for comfort. The villagers are terrified, and life in Drowning, always risky, becomes downright dangerous. Who is the mysterious stranger Rye sees talking with her mother? How will the rogue Bog Noblin be captured? Children should enjoy this adventuresome fantasy, but I didn't think the characters were ... morevery well developed, nor the world-building very convincing. The mother, Abby, in particular was very grating and unoriginal, sounding as if she'd read too many parenting books. 4th-6th grade.
review 2: Not great but not terrible. It was a very average book. I definitely think there were some problems with (the lack of) character development. Everyone was very one dimensional, and it's hard to become involved in a story without compelling characters--or, even worse, characters that had all the components to be compelling but weren't. Also, the author is terrible in regards to poetry and couplets, and should probably just forego the attempt at such in future books. There wasn't much in this book, but what was present was bad enough to detract from the book. less
