review 1: This was a surprisingly good book, it centers on Gareth a cripple who is a lord and who saves a youg girl from falling out a tree when they were chrildren only to end up meeting her when both are adults.Gareth can't walk but discovers he can fly so thats basically it.My main problem with this book is that it was pegged as a steampunk/fantasy/romance and I'm sorry to stay it was lacking big time in the steampunk department which let it down a little for me, but apart from that I did really enjoy the fairy/romance aspect of the book and I found the story flowed and was fast paced enough to keep me reading.I did like Gareth, he was moody and abrupt which considering how people saw him was understandable.Jessamine was pleasent and I loved the way she wouldn't let Gareth push h... moreer away and just kept chasing him.The story was well written and kept progressing at a steady pace so I didn't find myself getting bored, there were no long drawn out parts to this book and it all fit perfectly.I liked the fairy twist on this book and would have liked a little more of that aspect, lets hope book 2 has more fairy's in it.All in all I really enjoyed this book and will be reading book 2.
review 2: This book was very well written and provided a fast, enjoyable read in a fascinating new world. As a fan of both steampunk and traditional fantasy I found it intriguing to see this combination of the two, particularly using the Scottish connections to the Fae folk mythology. The characters hugely reminded me of the ensemble in Kady Cross's Steampunk Chronicles (another series that I love) - Gareth is another rendition of the Griffin King moody hero type, though he is made much more interesting by his physical condition. I enjoyed all of the characters and found them to be very individual and well developed.I particularly enjoyed the idea of the 'bonnet club' and the automation elements of the story and would have liked to see more made of them. I didn't really get into the Fae side of the story to be honest so I was glad to have the other element to hold my interest. The relationship between Jessamine and Gareth was well-played and engaging to read.Speaking as a disabled person myself, however, I did find Gareth to be too whiny about his condition for my liking. Considering the other incredible abilities he has, I don't really buy into his 'suffering in silence' feeling. Perhaps there wasn't enough of his persecution in the tale to really sell it to me, but that was the only thing that put me off this story. I suspect if you're not a disabled person then you won't focus on that sort of thing in the tale and will probably give it five stars! less
