review 1: It was a good book, & I enjoyed reading it. It is a coming-of-age story of a teenage boy in Norway, in a working-class neighborhood of Oslo. It is life, seen through Auden's eyes & mind. You see his family life, his social life & working life. There is a lot of change going on. The Vietnam War is happening, and the Beatles and Rolling Stones are popular. The book is translated well, and is an easy read. I found the story somewhat depressing, overall yet, in spite of that, I enjoyed it very much. I look forward to reading more of Per Petterson's books.

While his best friend revels in the rebellious... more spirit inspired by a flag-raising prank at school, Audun refuses to join in and takes the heat from the principal instead. When he runs away to a cardboard-box hideout one night, he spends the evening spying on his own house. Audun is a troubled boy, trying to find his "home" and his place in the world. His alcoholic, violent father is absent, his drugging younger brother dies in a driving accident, his sister may be mixed up with an abusive guy, and his mother, though well-meaning, is fairly oblivious to him. I was engaged by Audun's perspective; i found his angst understandable. Most of all, i'm excited to discover this author. His style here is excellent, considering that he wrote this early on in his writing career. less
