review 1: Lyrical prose but not overblown, lovingly assembled. A joy to read and could be re-read with pleasure. What amazes is that today ( the year 2014) one still sees remnants of the Ascendancy, most of the acreage sold but rattling around in granite blocks of houses always given a name. At cocktail parties they indulge in namedropping their residences at each other. How quaint, like the rising damp that is ruining the plaster walls, and paneling, wainscoting and skirting board, beyond repair. But not to worry, the good antiques have been sold off ages ago, many of them hauled to dealers in New York and San Fransisco for a drier climate where the furniture at least can escape the pervasive rot.Perhaps the AngloIrish families who were burned out in the early 20th century were luck... morey since that finally freed them from the burden of pretending, pretending, pretending: to be relevant.
review 2: The first half of this book is coldly and factually recounted in first person by Iz as if she had lost all emotion in marriage to Ronnie and as if her son never developed any personality that she could tell us about. The family lives in a lighthouse by the sea. The only thing that seems to speak to Iz is the changing motion of the sea. This segment was so cold, I almost quit reading. I kept on however in order to find out why the book had gotten a prize. The second half of the book was the tale of Iz's life prior to her marriage to Ronnie. It is warm, vivid with characterization and details the path of Iz into love and its consequences.Completion of the book brought about the discovery that the book probably won its prize because the contrast in one's approach to life changes with one's emotional styate. less

OK for a romance but little of historical value, something I look for in books I read.
