review 1: A delightful portrait of four flawed characters that, when united, created some beautiful music. As George Harrison opined in the Beatles Anthology, the "trivia and games" that ignited in 1968 blossomed into a paradise that litigators can only dream of. As the suits deal with the suits, the boys in the band maintain a rocky but loving relationship with each other which, like any other family, is as supportive as it is spiteful. For those looking for an Anthology-like sheen cast upon the group, this would not be the book for you. The power plays by Harrison, McCartney and Lennon (less so for Starr, who chooses to fight depression and alcoholism instead of his former bandmates) are an emotional limbo game of 'how low can you go', while the Beatle backdrop, always present... more in the four's lives, can be shown to be equal parts inspiration and exasperation. A real story of real people.
review 2: Informative, enlightening, and myth-shattering, this book is at its best when keeping itself in the realm of history and at its worst when gleefully slinging mud at Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison. They very well deserve it, but Doggett wallows in their moral failings in the smuggest possible way. The only thing he seems to enjoy more is their shattered hopes for a utopian Apple Corporation. Schadenfreude aside, this was a great read. less

Nicely written. A bit long at places. Perfect balance of fact and gossip.
