review 1: The book is a narrative of WWI, told through the journal entries & letters of people affected by the war. I expected it to be disjointed and choppy, but it just continued to flow and I couldn't put it down. One of my favorite historical books in recent memory, and a great way to get a very intimate view into the events of the time. While not necessary for the enjoyment of this book, I would recommend to first brush up on general WW1 history, to be able to get a little more out of it. (I ended up spending a lot of time on Wikipedia during/after reading). The only negative aspect was that the content focused a bit much on the Allied powers. The Ottoman viewpoint is covered from the perspective of a Latin American mercenary fighting in the Ottoman army, and he alludes to the A... morermenian Genocide on several occasions. It would have been extremely valuable to also have a Turkish account of these events, to show their mindset as they were committing these crimes.
review 2: Very worthwhile as a history, not of the war, but of what it was like for these 20 people to be involved in the war. If you're not fairly familiar with the outlines of the war as a whole, this book won't help you in that regard. A not so minor complaint: Even though some of these people move around a great deal, sometimes from one end of Europe to the other, or through stretches of Africa and the Mideast, the individual sections provide only the most basic information about where the person is at any moment (Beho Beho, anyone?) Obscure place names are often not identified even as to country. A few maps would have been nice. In addition, I found that for at least the first quarter of the book I had to refer constantly to the list of Dramatis Personae toward the front of the book to keep these people straight in my mind, and a little note under the title of each section would have spared me that nuisance. less
