review 1: Reading this book is a feat in and of itself. After you get far enough into the book to know you cannot escape, you have to grit your teeth and slog through these heavier closing chapters, wondering how it will end and what will happen to these voices you've grown to love, root for, weep with, and become utterly familiar. And what a finish to leave you utterly crumbled, when you close out the read, with tears streaming down your face as Englund draws the war to a close... Stupendously written. What a noble achievement and tribute to lives and fates 100 short years ago.
review 2: Absolutely amazing book, follows the stories of 20 individuals through WW1 from both sides of the story and several nations, through their letters, diaries etc. Completely fascinating,
... more I couldn't put it down. While it's not written as a book that fully explains and describes the war's events, he wants the reader to feel as the participants themselves did, cut off from the full information and almost trapped in their own events. A very emotional and involving weaving of stories, I loved every minute of this book (if you can love such a disturbing subject). less

very disjointed - a few pages for each person, and the author tracked the stories of over 20 people.

Interesting take on the war, snippets of individuals as they progress through the four years.
