review 2: This book will stick with me for a long time. It is indeed both beautiful and sorrowful...and at turns horrific. Highly recommended if you have any interest in really getting the down and dirty first-person perspective of the first really modern war; or if you're interested in the complicated political and social maelstrom that Europe was at the time. The way that Englund has arranged it chronologically, skipping from one person's journal to another; crossing enemy lines, can take a little getting used to, but flows well pretty quickly, and really maintains both the differences in perspective, and the maturation of some of the characters' opinions and beliefs over time. My great-grandfather emigrated from Austria-Hungary around the time of the Great War, so I was interested in it partly for that reason. The one perspective I would like to have heard from was a munitions factory worker, as I know they were churning out millions of shells, etc. during those four years. less
