review 1: I really wanted to like this book more, if only for the exceptional world building (though I could have used a little more explanation on certain of the things the author takes for granted,) but the terse prose style didn't work for me here at all. Peter Higgins can write gorgeously descriptive passages when he feels like it (see: the marshlands) but he skips action and emotion in favor of stating the bald facts of the story, and that doesn't work, for me at least, in a fantasy novel. Terrific Soviet/Russo-based fantasy/thriller otherwise. I especially loved the touch of sci-fi brought in by the angels, as well as the philosophical underpinnings.
review 2: Many things are in this book. Space angels. Giants. Detectives. Twig golem things. Sort-of Russia. Terrori
... moresm. Tea. Weird powers. Sentient water. People replacing their skin with things that aren't skin. Golems with dog brains. Art criticism. Trains. Horrible experiments performed on orphans. Does that seem like too much? It is kind of too much. But in the end it all works, and you will want to read to the end. less

Sadness... This is only the beginning and now we must wait.

Meh. It ends way too abruptly.
