review 1: 3.5/5. This is the sort of book that makes you feel sad about the vagaries of fate, about the kind of world we live in. The protagonist's nationality/religion and so on are not very apparent through about 75-80% of the book, at least to me, which I really liked. The author is very skilled with words, there are many quotable sentences through the course of the book. The story is pretty simple and it is narrated from the protagonist's perspective, flitting to and from the past and the present in chapters. The entire book is like a letter to a beloved, narrating experiences of many years that they are separated, although most of those experiences are melancholic. Its paced a bit on the slower side, although the number of pages are not as many, it may feel like one has read a ... more250+ page book. Read if you like philosophizing about love, life and like a melancholic tone to your books.
review 2: "In the Orchard, the Swallows" is a slim book but carries much weight and packs full punches. It is a poignant letter of love, an inner recount of memories, a grateful recognition of support, and an intimate chronicle of life, by a soul unjustly broken but whose fragments are slowly being pieced back together. Peter Hobbs impresses with the distinct tone that brought me to The Orchard, The Prison, and The Village of mountainous northern Pakistan, and evoked that Middle Eastern lyricism in the simplicity of his words. Those last few chapters were absolutely beautiful, tying all threads together while tugging at my heartstrings. less
