To find some books for my first reading challenge I browsed audiobook titles and decided to listen to The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant. I picked this book for a couple reasons, the first being Addie’s Jewish heritage. I’m somewhat familiar with Jewish traditions, but I was eager to learn more, especially from the female perspective. I also wanted to read The Boston Girl because it highlights the struggles many immigrant families faced in their new American lives. Addie is the only one in her family to be born in the United States, so her experience differs from those of her parents and older sisters.
After finishing Diamant’s novel, I’ll begin Nancy Allen’s A Killing at the Creek. This book is #2 in Allen’s Ozarks Mystery series and even though I haven’t read the first book, The Code of the Hills, I think I’ll be okay. This story takes place in the Missouri Ozarks, and I figure since I’ve never read anything from that area before, it’ll diversify my reading. The fact that this is a murder mystery makes it even more appealing. I’m glad that A Killing at the Creek is part of a series, because if I like this book there will be more for me to read.
As of now, these are my two picks to help diversify my reading. If I finish them in a timely manner I plan to find more to read by January’s end.
Happy reading!
