review 1: Oh, was this a disappointment. I picked this up because I loved the three short stories set in this world that were published in the tor.com anthology I have been working my way through, and the novel just didn't live up to the promise of the stories. Unnecessarily flowery language, cardboard bad guys, and one tired fantasy trope after another. Maybe if I hadn't read the stories first and so set the bar so high, I wouldn't have been so disappointed, but as it is I gave it a little over 100 pages and it still hadn't caught my interest, so I returned it to the library. Life's too short to waste time on books I'm not enjoying!
review 2: I would rate this at 3.5 stars not 4 yet. The book reminds me a lot of the Eye of the world by Robert Jordan. There is a lo
... moret of potential in the book, yet certain parts that should be slowed down, more detailed, is glossed over in a chapter. While other parts when traveling is bogged down in excess detail. I also find that the characters do not have the true shades of grey that mark an excellent writer.I definitely would love to see the next book, I feel the author has so much potential, and for the first real book I have seen from him, can really grow. For those who are having an issue getting through it, I would recommend skimming at times. It is something I do not do, but I totally can understand at certain areas were the story seemed to grind to a halt. less

Finally finished! This book was good, but it was a little too long.

Derivative, juvenile, lackluster and one dimensional.
