review 1: A wonderful book which started out interesting and ended with tears streaming down my face. Billy is not easy to like, but understandable and once he gets under your skin you ache for him. At first the ending left me a bit unsatisfied, but the more I digest it, the more I realise that this ending is the only possible one for this book. Nothing is tied in a neat little bow with everything settled but then neither is life and that more than anything is what this book is about.
review 2: Being Billy captures all the emotion and anger you'd expect from a teenager who's spent 8 years in care and lives in the shadow of a abusive step dad and being abandoned by an alcoholic mother. Billy is sooooo angry at everyone and everything but the book follows him on a journey
... moreto friendship and realisation that not everyone is out to get him. This is a great book with some really poignant moments. Billy's protection of his younger siblings is lovely and his complex relationship with his care worker is touching but the book doesn't sugar coat the details. less
