review 1: I read the book "Eleven Rings" by Phil Jackson and even from the first page I fell in love with the story. In the beginning of Phil's book, he explains about how it was like growing up in a small town and being known as a great basketball player and baseball player. Phil also says how much easier the competition was in his hometown, unlike oce he left his hometown and went to go play college basketball. High school basketball and college basketball are two completely different things, competition wise. In his hometown there was nobody as tall as him or strong as him, but once he played in college he soon realized that, not only were there people taller than his, but they were better. It was a rough transition for Phil, he didn't know if he should, keep playing basketball, ... moreplay baseball, or give up on his sports dreams and focus on his academics more. Phil decided to tough it out and keep playing basketball, which he ended up excelling at more than baseball. Once he ended his senior year of college he entered the NBA draft. He was drafted by the New York Knicks, and at the time they were not good what so ever. And Phil Jackson was going to change that. After a couple of years with playing for the Knicks, they became very good. With their power house center Willis Reed and elusive point guard Walt Frazier, they were near unstoppable. The year was 1971 when the Knicks won their first championship against the L.A Lakers. Nobody ever thought that the Knicks were going to beat Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers, it just wasn't possible. But that night it was possible, the good guys won against the bad guys. Phil Jackson and the Knicks went on to beat the Lakers again in the championship, making it Phil Jacksons second championship victory. Around 15 years later Phil Jackson became the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, where he coach one of the best players of all time, Michael Jordan. With Michael Jordan's skills and Phil Jacksons coaching abilities, nobody could stop this powerhouse team. They went on to win 6 championships. That team is known to be one of the best teams to ever play the game of basketball, and being apart of such an amazing thing was very rewarding for Phil and made him feel complete as a coach. After Michael Jordan left the Bulls in 1999, Phil Jackson decided it was time to move on aswell. The next year Phil became the head coach of the L.A Lakers where Shaquille O'Neil and Kobe Bryant played. The mixture of Kobe and Shaq was very deadly, but now you add Phil Jackson to the mix, and you have potentially the greatest team to ever be put together. They ended up winning 3 championships 3 years in a row. After that 3rd championship Shaq decided to move to a different team and end the dynasty. But Phil and Kobe didn't stop after those 3 championships, they kept going and ended up winning 2 more after Shaq had left. Once Kobe was injured and the Lakers team seemed to have nothing left for Phil, he left. He is currently the GM for the New York Knicks. This book did have some slow parts in in but overall I was very interested in the stories that he shared and the lessons that he learned along the way. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in seeing how people become successful through hard work and enjoy sports. After all of the championships that Phil has won in his life, he feels complete not only as a coach but a human being.
review 2: While I enjoyed SACRED HOOPS in spite of (or perhaps because of?) its pleasing eccentricities, I found EVELEN RINGS borderline unreadable. The book is a structureless, rambling mess; it doesn't seem to have any purpose or thesis; and it veers unpredictably from "leadership lessons" to overly detailed accounts of periods of the author's life. The worst is that Jackson's "voice" in SACRED HOOPS--which was genuine, open, curious, and humble--has here transformed into self-indulgent, boastful, and narcissistic. I can't imagine this book appealing to anyone other than the most die-hard Jackson fan. If you have not read SACRED HOOPS, start there. less
