Since I read a comic book yesterday about a cartoon (Rocko’s Modern Life)that I enjoyed in my early years, I thought that I would do the same for today. One of my favorite cartoons in the mid 1990’s was The Tick which aired on Fox and featured Townsend Coleman as the voice of our bumbling superhero The Tick. It was an interesting and certainly different kind of superhero that I later on in life found interesting that he was created in my backyard of Boston. After Amazon decided to bring the show back in Live action form, New England Comics decided that they would bring back The Tick and I have issue number one for you guys. In this issue our hero is thrust into action right away as he and his trusty sidekick Arthur have to battle not just ninjas, but their mortal enemies as well the Murder Clowns after they stumble on a sketchy situation down at the docks. During the battle The Tick is hit with something that causes him to start speaking in French and Arthur becomes worried as they head on a journey of discovery. For more info on the comic and anything else Tick related, you can click here.

The thing that I love most about The Tick is the humor and the ridiculous various villains and heroes that you will meet in the course of the series. The idea that murder clowns and ninjas have a hatred towards each other, but they put it all aside just for their hatred of The Tick is hilarious. I love how they structured it with a fight right away just to get you hooked in and then the comedy that ensues just to give you some laughs. The Tick is like a combination of Mr. Magoo and Superman (without the flying or radar vision) who looks like he has a Wolverine type origin story. They definitely acquired a great writer in Cullen Bunn and his partner Jimmy Z who definitely did their research on The Tick. The artwork is kind of old school in a 90’s kind of look, but it’s definitely one that I think fans of the series will enjoy for sure. The panels are easy to follow along with, but I do warn you that at one point they openly mess with you on the page layout. Check out my grades below:
