review 1: I've heard Philip Gulley speak, read one of his non-fiction books, If God is Love, and also really enjoy his Harmony Series books.Sam Gardner is a Quaker pastor in his childhood home of Harmony. In this book Sam agrees to substitute for the ailing Unitarian pastor in the marriage of "Chris and Kelly". Sam doesn't realize until the ceremony is in progress that Chris and Kelly are both women.Sam's congregation is appalled that he has conducted a gay wedding. Sam is appalled at their attitude so he resigns. Same eventually finds a new parish, but soon learns there are troubles in that congregation, too.

... moretually, A Place Called Hope segues between Harmony and Hope and there's actually a second book in the Hope series being written.Anyway, all of the small-town humor, frustrations and triumphs are back in this engaging book. I was laughing out loud during much of it and it's made my heart feel good. Philip Gulley has a sharp eye for all of the foibles that befall man, even small-town pastors. His droll wit is just superb. Thank you, Philip Gulley!! less

Maybe not my favorite Sam Gardner book, but there were certainly moments of pure amusement.
