review 1: *This review may contain spoilers*Philip Sington is the author of three solo novels, the most recent of these being “The Valley of Unknowing” (2012) preceded by “The Einstein Girl” (2009) and “Zoia’s Gold” (2005).“The Einstein Girl” is “a stylish thriller” (‘The Times’) and revolves around a young woman suffering with amnesia and the psychiatrist who undertakes to help her.I’ll admit, I picked this book up because of the cover. It looked like something I would enjoy reading. And I did enjoy it. There was a palpable sense of suspension throughout the novel that kept me hooked so that I would stay up late to read “just one more chapter!”But I did struggle with this novel at times because of the scientific element to it. As the title suggests ... moreEinstein is prominent throughout this novel; both the man and the theories. There are at least a few chapters where Einsteins’ ‘Theory of Relativity’ was discussed in depth. Or, at least, more depth than I cared for. If, like myself, you are not a physicist or someone, at least, with a keen interest and/or knowledge of/in science this book can make you feel overwhelmed. The chapters concerning Einstein’s theories I largely skim-read and, for the most part, did not understand a word of. I don’t feel that not understanding these chapters took away from my reading experience. I was still able to enjoy the book, a great deal. The story was innovative, interesting and sparks the reader’s curiosity. “Is she Einstein’s daughter?” “Will Kirsch’s illness be discovered?” These were just two of the million questions that the chapters sparked in my head as I read through. It’s so full of suspense and paranoia that the reader has to read on after each chapter to see what comes next. And the ending was bittersweet, really. Sad, in some senses, but happy and, unlike some novels I’ve read recently, it had a finality to it; a definite ending.I’ve rated this book 3 out of 5 stars. It got a lower rating because I do feel it would have been better without so much of Einstein’s theories delved into. The majority of people who read this novel are not going to understand much of what is said in the ‘science’ chapters, like myself, and because of this it’s not the easiest book to pick up and read on a Sunday morning, or before you go to bed. Despite this, though, it was a very enjoyable read.
