review 1: This was an OK first novel. The author dives deep into life in Eastern Germany during the Communist era, and it paints a vivid depiction of a struggling novelist as he falls in love with a younger woman. He must maintain an elaborate ruse in order to keep her trust and in the end it ruins him. It was a bit long at times though, and I ended up getting frustrated with the main character because he could not fix the things that bothered him. Also it seems like the book would be more of a thriller, but it is not.
review 2: I received this book as a Goodreads Firstread. Unfortunately, this book did not resonate with me at all. I found myself reading a few chapters and then placing it aside to read something more interesting. Then repeating this process over a per... moreiod of 6 weeks or so. It was just too slow moving for me. The writing was fine, the characters seemed believable, but this book was just not a good fit for me as a reader. less
