review 1: This was an OK first novel. The author dives deep into life in Eastern Germany during the Communist era, and it paints a vivid depiction of a struggling novelist as he falls in love with a younger woman. He must maintain an elaborate ruse in order to keep her trust and in the end it ruins him. It was a bit long at times though, and I ended up getting frustrated with the main character because he could not fix the things that bothered him. Also it seems like the book would be more of a thriller, but it is not.
