review 1: I'm not really going to write a review as such here at this point, but must say that this book did make me think...MUCH more than most do. I worry that her view of scripture is a bit too low, even from the point of view of someone such as myself that sees “sola Scriptura et scriptura sola” as false teaching, thus I may have held the author somewhat at “arm’s length. That said, the core structure of her argument is very solid, but her inferences around that structure (or thesis) can be at times speculative, perhaps a bit hopeful on her part, and perhaps, hopeful on my part, a bit too grand or hyperbolic. Still, I love the vivid color of her writing style in which she posits her important thesis as well as the general positive tone of this work in light of the push... more back it will likely garner from the most conservative among us. Bottom line is that this short book was well worth my time and will sharpen the way I think about the modern Church.
review 2: this book takes on the entirety of church history and sociology in just 160 pages. extremely ambitious. tickle acknowledges from the beginning that this book is not meant to be a comprehensive, in-depth look at the amorphous sociology of the church throughout history. she accomplishes what she sets out to do: provide a framework for interpreting the massive shift taking place in the North American Christian church. just as buzzfeed is no replacement for an NY Times article, so is Tickle's book no substitute for the volumes of academic work on church history/sociology. however, it is not intended to be. tickle generalizes and glosses over points that a longer volume would have peered into more deeply. admittedly, she does ignore significant cultural movements altogether (Jesus Movement, Puritanism, ethnic church bodies), but all in all, this book is pretty excellent. it whets the appetite for those interested in beginning a study of church history/sociology. I would recommend. less
