review 1: I had not heard about this book and became curious when it was significantly promoted by Del Rey at New York Comic Con last month. The line to meet Pierce Brown was noticeably long so there must have been something about this book that merited a look. I had the opportunity to speak with the author, a kind young gentleman, who graciously provided me with two signed copies (one for me, one for my daughter). Hoping that a person reads your book is a request for a commitment of one’s time, which is never to be wasted. This book did not disappoint. Or to put it more directly, it was a very enjoyable read. Not at first however, the first few introductory chapters are slow paced and lead to predictable events. Then comes the twist just in time for Act 2 and the curiosi... morety meter goes through the roof. Yes, you can definitely appreciate the Hunger Games influence. But I also saw a little bit of Gladiator, some Spartacus, a touch of the Matrix and even a hint of Donny Brasco. And maybe it was just me but even Dune was spinning in my head. When Act 2 completely grabs my interest, from then on it is pure enjoyment. I look forward to reading the continuing saga. Is it a YA book? Possibly, depending on how one defines a YA book. As far as this book is concerned, old dudes can appreciate it too and pass it on to their YA children to read as well.
review 2: OK. So I listened to this book on Audible and the narrator was great. I am a big fan of YA dystopic novels (is this really YA?) and this one is actually pretty good. Bloodier than the Hunger Games, but perhaps a little less human. Of course, some aspects are going to be derivative, but there is enough ingenuity to keep you intrigued. The main characters are well-rounded and the plot is sufficient enough to keep you interested. I think the strategies of war and realities of combat are solid. Plot is fine, there are some holes, but you can slip right past them. All in all a good read and I am looking forward to the next book. less

Would make a good movie. Better yarn than Hunger Games.
