review 1: This book represents my initial foray into the world of mysteries translated from the Flemish, and I renewed it twice before I was able to get to it. A bold jewelry store robbery is discovered quite by accident by two policemen out on a bender. It turns out they are detectives, and though they have been out all night they're professional enough to follow through, call in backup, and begin to process the scene. Imagine their surprise when they discover the jewelry is all there...destroyed in an aquarium full of aqua regia, an acid so strong it can melt even gold. What can possibly be the meaning of such a bizarre move on the part of the well-dressed intruders posing as the owners so as not to raise the suspicion of the public as they went about their business in the unshutt... moreered shop? This interesting police procedural poses mystery after mystery before the puzzle is finally solved. That said, the action was a bit too plodding for me, and the curious question of the square of revenge of the title felt just too contrived. I am a child of the dark Scandinavian, the urbane British and the brisk American mysteries, so it may be a question of building more familiarity. Should another title in this series become available I may give it a try, but it won't be at the top of my list.
review 2: Wanted to like this book more...not that I disliked it a lot. I read historical/international mysteries for the feel and atmosphere they can invoke. Places I have yet to travel to, times I can only imagine living in. This novel gave me little feel for either Bruges or things of a Belgian nature. On the up side, Aspe's characterizations were well-written. What was it about? Power, money, family scandal, incest, revenge...the usual. less

The language was a little awkward, possibly because it is a translation.
