review 1: This book was a strange experience...I dont know how else to describe it. The book got so many intriguing and positive reviews I thought I would give it a try. I'm not unhappy that I spent the time to read it but I wont read another of Poppet's books. Let me explain: The concept was good, interesting and fresh and the author did a lot of research and tied mythology and theology and just plain old fantasy together really well. If I were rating the book on concept, I would give it a 4. Unfortunately, the problem (and the 1 star) was from the actual flow in the book. The writing was really hard to follow and did not flow well at all. Also, the descriptors and even some of the dialogue (internal and external) was really poetic but was way too abstract. That happened often (par... moreagraph after paragraph of metaphor and poetic descriptors). Let me give an example..."The sound coming off his skin is sending chirping crickets through my veins and every time I inhale, it's sweet and wild. Melting syrup basting desert sky, sweet.". I suspect that Poppet is a poet because her word choice is very deliberate and evokes interesting visuals. In fact, I even bet she is a good poet and I was impressed with some of the phrases she used (would have been great in a poem). But it was hard to read in a book (imagine reading a 200+ page poem). I found myself finishing the book because the concept was so interesting but wincing as I did it. I am not sorry I read this book. I will not read another book by this author.
review 2: So I'm still not really sure how I feel about this book. First, it was free, otherwise I really don't know how I would've stumbled onto it. The first few chapters made me think "Wait, it did say paranormal romance, right? Not just romance?" Then all of the sudden it turns into a little too much of a forced smuttiness (or as I've called it before, rapey). I mean, yeah, I eventually get over it and continue with the book, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Similar to the way I felt when I read the Immortals After Dark book. I mean, it really had some good smut -- it would've been better off just leaving it a single paranormal love story, rather than making it some paranormal love triangle with some kinda forced smut scenes. That being said, I added 3 of her other books to my "to-read" shelf :-) less
