review 1: I found this book to be a delightful yet odd sort of page turner. It really lacked much in the way of climax, and if you charted out the story structure it would look mostly flat, which makes it sound like a yawn, but actually I was riveted and devoured the book in large chunks. The characters are wonderful, really the heart of the book. The writing is engaging, witty, and brilliantly communicates a sense of the age. As a Historical it is quite successful; well-researched and full of period details judiciously used.
review 2: This novel is set in seventeenth-century England when the famous Theatre Royal was putting on plays by the poet laureate John Dryden and the playwright Aphra Behn. Charles II has been restored to the throne, but his queen Catherine of Bra... moreganza remains childless so he sees a number of mistresses. Lady Castlemaine gives him many children in fact before he meets Nell, 'still remembered today as the orange girl who captured the heart of the king'. Her real name was Ellen Gwyn and she sold oranges at Covent Garden's theatre Royal before she became an actress herself, getting the stage name Nell. Parma writes the story of Nell's affair with Charles by means of her fictional journal entries and letters from the royals. Parma's attention to historical accuracy and detail brings this period totally alive for the reader. This book is a different kind of reading experience but one that was very enjoyable. less
