Inspector Chen Cao
review 1: Inspector Chen's character gets deeper in this book. Chen has the ability to step up to the edge of the abyss, look around briefly, step back and use what he observed to solve whatever crime he's working on. In this book he is on vacation at a resort reserved for very high communist party members at the request of a higher up minister. The minister it seems had an ulterior motive sending Chen there. Chen in usual manner finds himself thick in another murder case with potentially grave political overtones. The dialogue in the last 50 pages shows Chen at his best--sifting through the available facts--finding the truth no one else was looking for.
review 2: This really gets 3.5, edging toward 4. I am a fan of the Inspector Chen mysteries. He lives and works in S
... morehanghai and is the creation of a Chinese-born author who now lives with his family in St. Louis, MO, of all places. This is number 8 in the series and, like the previous books, features many poems by the author and references to numerous Chinese poets. It's been an education for me! Enjoy the books all the more after having visited China and having seen first hand the booming economy and the lives of people ruled by Communism. less
