review 1: I did not think I would like this book because I love Romeo and Juliet so much and my appreciation of Shakespeare knows no bounds, but what made me pick it up was the interest in Benvolio's character. The secondary characters are so interesting in the play and Rachel Caine took a brave leap telling the story of the star-crossed lovers from Ben's view. Except it was so much more than that; I loved her backstory for Mercutio, for Ben and I thought she captured the atmosphere of the time really well. I especially loved this book for the opportunity to delve more into Verona as a place, into the politics and the characters that bit more than you get in the play. If you like Romeo and Juliet you'll like this book! For the first while admittedly I just enjoyed it as something to ... moreread but then the whole scene with Tomasso just hooked me in and I flew threw it.I also think it captured the pace of the play really well too and I liked how she made the book into 5 acts. Tidbits like that were cool. Again I also really loved how she wrote for our time but heavily inspired by Shakespearean speech. Worth a read and a gripping, twisting and turning tale.
review 2: This book mainly relies on the fact that you roughly understand and know the story of 'Romeo and Juliet'. It is the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' in the point of view of Benvolio, cousin of Romeo. It has an action packed ending which will make you unable to put the book down. You grow to love and care for the characters which have the main parts in this book, which are Benvolio and Rosaline. I really enjoy the part of the book when we get to see Rosaline's points of view on how Romeo felt towards her and describing the annoyance of Romeo, wherever she went. Having just read 'Romeo and Juliet' myself this is an excellent retelling of age old story and is then developed on further to what happens after the end of the play. This book we get to see the reactions of both houses on what has happened to them, and the heaviness of the power which benvolio has to take on when his cousin dies at the end of the play, not only that but he has other problems which he has to face. My only problem with this book was that I found the blurb misleading. It talks about a curse that will claim the lives of many however we only hear about this curse later on in the book and after the death of Romeo. The first part of the book is mainly about Benvolio's adventures which he has at night in Verona All in all this book has little to complain about and is excellent for anybody who knows the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' and has always wondered about the characters such as Benvolio and Rosaline. This is a story which will have you in captured inside the story and worrying for the life of certain characters . This book will have you in its grasp until you finish the book. less
