review 1: While I didn't love the book, I didn't hate it. For me due to the age of the characters, book is more of a young adult story so it lost some appeal. Storyline was interesting and at times emotional due to things that happened to the characters beyond their control. Book was actually pretty believable due to the "real life situations" from family life and drama from school, etc. The attraction and chemistry between Conall and Leora was steamy and hot but was glad he didn't want to rush into a sexual relationship with her. Can't wait to read the rest of the series to see what develops in their relationship. First book for me by this author but won't be my last.
review 2: Leora lives a vacuous life where her biggest concerns are calorie counting and living vicar
... moreiously through her best friend Kayla. At the point we meet her she is in the grip of sexual awakening and in a constant state of mild arousal looking for someone to help satiate her desires while also obsessing about her weight lifting. That's right she's a 'Gossip Girl' girl who does weights to keep her natural Italian physique in tip top New Yorker clone shape i.e. a polished slim hard-body. This was an aspect of the story I really disliked as I have zero interest in the dynamics of the weight lifting world and found it hard to buy into the bumbling 'Hugh Grant' type Conall as a dedicated 'meat head'.This story did not evolve in the way I expected at all, Leora seemed to have an initial connection with Brad that I thought was going to develop into an interesting angsty dilemma but didn't go anywhere instead Kyla (the stereotypical 'hard on the outside soft on the inside' type) just started dating him after little protestation. Then it turns out Conall is not a Mr Bumble but is in fact a hot, hardass who is a software developing weight lifting genius with a tortured past; perhaps not tortured so much as a bit sad as he recounts the tale of Alexandra, a salutary warning that 'drugs don't work'! So Conall and Leora get together and their weight lifting love story starts to unfold but all the while the menacing spectre of Raphael Varela hangs over all aspects of the story as we wait for his full import to be revealed! The further into this I got the more it seemed to ravel and loose direction, how can it go from Conall telling Leora 'you're my north' to him being 'busy' all the time without explanation and this is just after he had gone all 'Liam Neeson' on Raphael? In the end I was just happy I managed to finish this and I won't be reading the next installment. less
