review 1: Rachel Isadora has taken the old song "The Green Grass Grew All Around" and placed it in the middle of Africa, centered on an umbrella acacia tree. Her oil paint ,printed paper, and palette paper illustrations are just as beautiful as everything Isadora produces. The African setting is clear not just because of the animals depicted but because of the boldly-patterned painted borders on each spread. This book also features the addition of rebuses to the repeated refrain so non-readers can sing along. Sheet music is included in the back of the book, as well.Elementary music teachers will want to take a look at this one and possibly incorporate it into their collections.
review 2: "The Green Grass Grows All Around", African style! The art, as with all Rachel Isado
... morera books, is gorgeous--I think she's another of the artists who has been ignored by the Caledecott committee ignoramuses.I have mixed feelings about the rebuses. Certainly they will be fun for a child learning to read, or not reading yet, but they are a bit distracting. Then again, with illustrations this glorious, I doubt if many people will read this straight--they'll be too busy poring over the details. Full words and music are included in the back. Another winner by a creative and versatile author/illustrator. less

The song is of course a classic, and the African setting was a nice update.
