review 1: 3.5 starsI really enjoyed her examples of practical ways that she teaches, corrects, and enjoys her children. I'm going to go back and take notes on these for the future. I also really liked her examination of how a parent's bad attitude can cause or escalate bad situations. While I think it's important to remember that nothing we do ensures our children's obedience, happiness, or salvation, I still need the exhortation to self-control. I didn't like the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality that she claims is the only godly choice for women who are struggling with some aspects of motherhood. I find joy in my baby and husband (and the Holy Spirit, whom she didn't talk enough about in that section), but sorrow in the struggle to lose baby weight, handle screaming ... morefits, and find my identity as a new mom. I think it's okay to mourn the loss of my pre-mom life and find joy in things besides caring for my family.
review 2: What I loved about this book was that it is made up of very short chapters that I could quickly read before falling asleep after a long day of toddler rearing and go to bed feeling encouraged and inspired to try out some of her philosophies the next day. I borrowed this from the library, but am going to buy my own copy so I can keep picking it up when I need a little boost of spiritually minded parenting inspiration. less
