review 1: I loved this book! I love books that take place in a school setting like this one, but the author never got sucked into a daily routine in the books. I loved Violet's and Tora's relationship, and how readers got to hear many of Violet's internal thoughts and struggles without getting dragged into fictional dithering. One thing that I didn't like as much was how rapid Violet and Nate's romance was - I think I was as surprised as Violet when Nate kissed her on the back lawn. Romantic tension and slow build-up is what makes that element of a book fun, but Rachel Morgan totally remedied that with Violet's byplay with Ryn. Their conversations and interactions were totally believable and funny - "I need your help...Do I have to get on my knees and beg!" or something along those ... morelines. I loved that scene - everything about these characters was totally believable.
review 2: Hm. So. This was free. And I'm certainly glad for that. The first 60% of this book was reeeeeally not very good. I even questioned finishing it, but I hate not finishing books, particularly short ones, so I stuck with it. I'm glad I did, because the end of the book really redeemed it. I almost gave this 3 stars instead of 2 solely based on the ending. There were some twists that I REALLY did not see coming (and in free Kindle books they're usually ridiculously obvious) and it had me desperate to finish the book to find out what was going to happen. Violet isn't my favorite main character ever, but I started to like her more towards the end. I found Ryn extremely interesting, though I'll let you discover why.I really did like the idea of the guardians, though I felt that the rest of the world wasn't discussed enough. There are clearly two different faerie kingdoms, but they're barely mentioned more than a "this is the good faerie kingdom, and the other one is bad." Hopefully in the future books, that gets fleshed out a little more.If you decide to download this book, I definitely wouldn't recommend paying for it, but if it's free and you can get through the crappy beginning to the first twist, I think you'll like it much more towards the end. less
