review 1: I'm disappointed with this book. It had all the hallmarks of a novel I should like- a plot involving characters with disability, a historical setting and I loved the fact it was written because of the author's relationship with her sister. I started off enjoying it but after the initial interest created by Beautiful Girl's story and voice I started to find it tedious and moralistic. All the characters are far too saintly apart from the baddies, homer's journey is unlikely to say the least and the ending is just a belated campaign against already closed institutions. Disappointing and, well, annoying.
review 2: "The Story of a Beautiful Girl" is one of the best novels I've read this year. I was hooked from the very first page of the novel. I loved Simon's prose-
... more-it was both simple and elegant. She did a wonderful job of developing each of the novel's different "narrators" (five in all). She seamlessly weaves these individual stories together with beautiful insight. I believe she captures the mind of her disabled characters perfectly, developing them so fully that readers connect and sympathize with them. I really appreciate that she didn't fall into stereotypes but instead wrote honestly about each person. I remember enjoying Simon's earlier memoir "Riding the Bus with my Sister," but I truly loved this novel. Her words have a sophistication and grace that all readers should experience. The novel really impressed me--and I recommend this book to everyone. less

Three and a half stars... It's been a while, but I remember really liking it.

Good story. Following the lives of three people makes for jerky reading.
