review 1: This book had good promise, and even started off great. It quickly abandoned its historical analysis of America's police forces, well-couched in constitutional theory, in order to spend three hundred pages giving example after example of botched SWAT raids. Balko does not present a fair argument; he uses emotional rhetoric and weighted prose to create clear villains and heroes, and completely ignores the possibility of there being another side of the argument even worth addressing. Too much energy is dedicated to explaining the "what" and the "how" without explaining the "why." Such a wasted opportunity for what could have been an important book... What a shame.
review 2: Important stuff. Interestingly, applicable to concerns of both the left and the right. The
... more main point that I took from this is that both the left and right have to get over justifying police brutality against those they don't agree with. Think it over, and you'll realize that eventually you will have an opinion in the minority, too. Also, mistaken break-ins are alarming, and should be more trumpeted in the media. less

I couldn't finish this. Reminds me of how let down I am by power in my country.

Well holy shit. Exhausting, infuriating, and very compelling read.

Between this book and The New Jim Crow, I'm somewhat terrified.
